Top 10 Zombie films – Non Comedy

Dancing_Zombie

Given yesterday’s post on ‘How Zombies speed mirrors Society’ of the time, it got me thinking whether I prefer Zombie movies with fast movers or slow ‘traditional’ walkers. Turns out my top 10 list is a bit of a mixture. Take a look and see which ones came out on top.

I decided not to put any films which IMDB classified as ‘Comedy’, as comedy and horror is covered in another post ‘Top 10 Comedy Horrors and Horror Comedies’. That said there are some nice comedic moments in a few of these films.

This top ten list (as they all are) is part of my quest to find my all-time favourite film.  A couple of these movies have ending up in other lists based on other categories, this was bound to happen, so I have put in a different actor I enjoyed seeing and a different quote.

10) Resident Evil (2002)

Resident Evil

Zombie speed – Fast

What stands out for me – Although not without its flaws, I’m such a fan of the computer game that I got caught up in all the action and reference in the film. Good opening scenes and I liked seeing the squad diminish through the booby traps.

I enjoyed seeing this actor in it – Michelle Rodriguez

Great quote –  Rain: All the people that were working here are dead.

Spence: Well, that isn’t stopping them from walking around.

9) [●REC] (2007)

rec

Zombie speed – Fast

What stands out for me – The realistic feel of the film along with the jumps and scares.

I enjoyed seeing this actor in it – I’ll level with you I didn’t know any of the actors in this. This was added so much to the realism though.

Great quote –  Álex: What’s your show called?

Ángela: While You’re Asleep.

Manu: While You’re Asleep? Then who watches it?

8) I Am Legend (2007)

7) Dawn of the Dead (2004)

dawn_of_the_dead 2004

What stands out for me – I’m not normally a fan of remakes, however director Zack Snyder does a terrific job of this, with a great soundtrack. Although, still not as good as the original.

I enjoyed seeing this actor in it – Matt Frewer

Great quote – Michael: So what’s the plan?

CJ: The plan is you drink a nice tall glass of shut the fuck up.

6) World War Z (2013)

Great quote –  Gerry Lane: You’re with CIA?

Ex-CIA Agent: But they’re not with me.

What stands out for me – Without giving too much away, the way it plays with the tropes of horror movies.

I enjoyed seeing this actor(s) in it – Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford

Great quote –  Daniel Truman: [seeing zombies] They’re like something from a nightmare.

Lin: No, they’re something nightmares are from.

Zombie speed – Slow

What stands out for me – The play on consumerism, the gore, the story, the characters, the bleakness (I seem to love bleakness in a film, although Hollywood in general seems to loath it).

I enjoyed seeing this actor in it – Tom Savini

Great quote – Peter: Something my granddad used to tell us. You know Macumba? Vodou. My granddad was a priest in Trinidad. He used to tell us, “When there’s no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth.
